Om (AUM) is the primordial sound and vibration of our very existence. In the philosophy of Nada Yoga, it is believed that the entire cosmos—and all that exists within it, including human beings—consists of vibration, not matter and particles. Everything in the universe is a manifestation of sound and vibration, and this vibrational essence is captured in the sacred syllable AUM. AUM represents the non-dual nature of reality, encompassing the totality of our experience in its threefold expression: waking, dreaming, and sleeping. In the waking state , we experience duality, where the individual self perceives separation from the external world. This is the realm of form, where the senses are active, and we experience the external world through perception. AUM’s first sound, "A," represents this waking state, the beginning of all creation, where differentiation is experienced, but it is still part of the whole. In the dreaming state , we enter a world of subtle experiences—an inner reality where the senses are not active, but consciousness still creates. The sound "U" in AUM represents this phase, where the individual self remains, but the duality of waking life is dissolved into the unity of thought, dreams, and imagination. It is a realm of fluidity, where boundaries blur, but the sense of "I" still persists.

Finally, in the sleeping state , we experience deep rest and peace, where duality ceases entirely, and the individual ego dissolves. This is the sound "M" in AUM, which represents the formless, undifferentiated state of pure consciousness, beyond time and space. In deep sleep, there is no distinction between self and other—just pure existence, the unmanifested potential of all creation.
